Overview

OtO is reinventing outdoor care through smart hardware and software. Backed by Rain Bird, a global leader in irrigation with over 90 years of industry expertise, we’re building the most dependable connected devices in lawn and garden. Thousands of customers already rely on OtO to manage their yards automatically, and we’re just getting started.

We’re looking for a Reliability Engineer to help ensure our devices are built to last. You’ll work hands-on to test, stress, and push our products to their limits, identifying potential points of failure before our customers ever encounter them. This role is key to making sure OtO devices stand up to the real world, season after season.

Responsibilities

This in-person role based in Tucson, Arizona provides direct, hands-on access to our test labs and hardware systems. You’ll work closely with the engineering team at OtO HQ in Toronto through regular on-site visits and occasionally travel to China to support our suppliers and manufacturing operations. If you're energized by real-world testing, global collaboration, and gaining deep insight into how great products are built from the ground up, this role is for you. Beyond the technical scope, this position offers a strong opportunity for career growth. We're seeking someone who is not only passionate about engineering but also eager to evolve beyond individual contributor work, ultimately helping lead and scale our reliability organization to meet the demands of a growing business.

  • Own reliability testing across OtO’s full product line, including mechanics, electronics, fluidics, and enclosures
  • Design and run lifecycle, thermal, ingress, vibration, UV, and long-term stress tests
  • Build and operate test machinery and fixtures that simulate real-world usage and extreme conditions based on field data
  • Partner with mechanical, electrical, firmware, and product teams to influence design decisions early in the process
  • Investigate failures and perform root cause analysis using tools like FMEA, Weibull, and fault tree methods
  • Work with suppliers and manufacturing partners to validate part and system reliability from production through to deployment
  • Develop and maintain documentation and internal standards to scale testing and validation across programs

Rain Bird is an equal opportunity employer

Qualifications

  • Degree in Mechanical, Electrical, or Mechatronics Engineering or equivalent practical experience
  • 3+ years in a reliability, test, or quality-focused product and hardware role
  • Familiarity with FMEA, root cause analysis, statistical methods, and reliability modeling
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills across engineering, product, and manufacturing teams
  • A builder’s mindset with a focus on real-world performance, not just lab results

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Experience running and analyzing structured reliability tests (thermal cycling, vibration, water ingress, UV, etc.)
  • Strong hands-on skills in building test rigs, using lab tools, and working with environmental chambers and data loggers
